It has been said that there are two lasting bequests we can give to our children--roots and wings:
Roots in a deep sense of connection to themselves, their community, and their place in the world that leads to a deep sense of curiosity and a love of learning.
   -- AND --
Wings that will help them soar into wider worlds of understanding and sense of purpose in how they bring forth their passions and talents as they grow.

A THOUGHTFUL AND COMMITTED GROUP OF FAMILIES WORKING TOGETHER TO BRING A HANDS-ON, CREATIVE, NATURE- AND PLAY-BASED EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING EXPERIENCE TO KIDS.
ABOUT ROOTS & WINGS
The Roots & Wings program is run at Freetown Farm, our 6.4 acre organic farm in Columbia. Farm-based education is among the most effective and promising forms of environmental, experiential, and place-based education because of the innate ability in people to connect to farms. Farm-based education promotes life values by relating to the social, moral, cognitive, and emotional aspects of the human experience and
it provides hands-on learning that builds confidence, self-awareness, and individual and collective responsibility which leads to the sustainable stewardship of our world. For questions about the program please email Roots & Wings Program Director, Lindsay Kreisher, at rootsandwings@cei.earth.

If you ARE NEW to ROOTS & WINGS, please note:
  • This program runs rain or shine and is held mostly outdoors (instructors seek shelter for the group when needed). Children must have appropriate clothing and shoes for all weather, through all seasons.
  • In order to participate, children must be registered homeschoolers. We cannot enroll children who attend public or private school.
  • Roots and Wings is not a homeschool umbrella. All enrolled families must submit the required paperwork and schedule their reviews with the county or another certified umbrella.
  • Please note that we do not currently have the support staff to meet the needs of children who would need an aid if they were in a public or private school setting.
  • Orientation for new families will be held prior to the start date of the program year. This date will be emailed for registered families.
