OUr locations

Based on our nature-based educational programs and with a tremendous outpouring of community support, during the week of the summer solstice of 2019 CEI became the owner and stewards of the last working farm in the town of Columbia, Maryland--now known as Freetown Farm.  This 6-acre property had been farmed organically by the previous owner, David Shaw, for 40 years and is a unique ecological gem that has rapidly become a place of common ground for our diverse community and the hub of CEI's intergenerational, experiential education programming.

Based on our transformative work at Freetown Farm and with tremendous support from the State of Maryland and Howard County government, during the week of the winter solstice of 2022 CEI became the steward of the Green Farmacy Garden in Fulton, Maryland. This 6-acre property was the home of the Duke family for 40 years and is a unique teaching garden and plant and seed sanctuary inspired by the work of world-renowned ethnobotanist Dr. James Duke, who curated more than 300 plant species traditionally used and/or researched for their medicinal properties.

Notice some fun and fascinating themes in this brief introduction? We invite you to learn more about each of our locations on their dedicated pages. All visits to both properties are by appointment or scheduled program only.

CEI humbly acknowledges the Indigenous people who were wrongfully removed from their ancestral lands where we live and work today. We offer our deepest respect to the Piscataway Conoy Tribe and all other tribes Indigenous to the central Maryland region where our organization is based.
